Type of films you make.

I'm just curious to know, do you make films that you want to watch, or do you make films that you can make (if you know what I mean.)
My favourite type of films to watch are Martial Arts Hong Kong films, but the stuff I'm writing are more like those character driven french films (which I also like to watch, but not as much as MAHK films.)

A combination of both making film's I like, and films I know are possible to make.

I like all types of films aslong as they are good at what they are meant to do. I mostly like to write films starting with people and relationships first, so I never sit down and say "ok, this wil be a ...".
I'd say if I had a favourite genre it would be one of those films that has everything - drama, romance, comedy

My main concern when making a film is making it original - or at least something that hasn't been done in the last 5/10 years!
Undoubtedly if I analysed what I wrote, there would be some patterns forming, made by various influences. That's a good film idea but its already been done Abres Los Ojos/Vanilla Sky.

I've been told that it's best not to take inspiration for a film from other films... it just leads to more of the same. So the question is... should a good director really be trying to make films that are similar to the films he likes or is that a sure sign of an amateur hack?

I'm impressed, that is a bold statement. As much as I pride myself in originality in my films, they are still going to be influenced by many of the films I like and watch. I think people should strive to be original, but not discount films that came before them as sources of ideas. There have been many great commercial films made by people obviously influenced by films, but have remained largely original. Pulp Fiction, or most Tarantino movies have numerous references to other films and to eachother, but I still believe they are quite original. Other films like Kevin Smith movies, or Raimi movies always mave references and strong influences derived from many films that came before them, but they are still original, because they thought, "well, what if we took something like that and ...". I could be wrong but these are just my thoughts.

i have to say that i like music a lot - so i combine the two and make videos based around music - interpretations of music with pictures, but not music videos (like for a band). it what i like doing and its what i feel im good at

i'll throw my hat into the game here - in school my art teacher used to tell me [i'll paraphrase] "that you should never copy what has been done before, merely be influenced and inspired by it. an original painting needs sources (sketches, photos, experiments) to back it up, which come from research"... i dont think i agree with that. as many a time i have watched tv or a movie and tried to do a bit of editing in a similar style or shoot in a similar way to something that i saw, but id still count my work as original.

it also brings up the point of a previous thread - they are stealing ideas from my head - where you finally have your own original idea - then your in the cinema and there onscreen is your "original" idea... BUGGER

Along the same line of thought... I'm trying to track down a quote. I heard it somehwere, but I can't remember where I heard it, who said it, or the exact wording. The gist was...

A bit of both. But i'm going to put a twist in your tale. I like lots of genres, action, romance, comedy, horror, sci fi...

Action is my favourite and yes, I like to mimic the genre, and therefore have made a few action shorts. However, i'm currently working on an action thing, a comedy and a horror.

I guess I just like to broaden my spectrum. Each genre has it's own different interesting factors, I'd like to make movies of many genres. But action is deffinatley my fort?
